Farm Safety

Agriculture is still one of the most dangerous occupations in the UK; recently there have been up to 45 fatalities per annum, nearly 1 per week.

Sadly, recent examples of this are:

    • 2012 - 3 die in slurry tank (Belfast)
    • 2013 – Farmer dies in roof fall (Scottish Borders)

We vigorously support the HSE ‘Make the Promise’ programme, by offering timely, risk specific and fiscally prudent professional advice and training services. It must also be considered that the HSE now apply FFI – Fee for Intervention (for material breaches), this will amount to £124.00 per hour charged for inspections that identify non -compliance, this will be on top of any civil or criminal litigation that may follow.

Under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, employers, employees, self- employed and contractors are responsible for their own safety and that of others, including members of the public. Normal considerations in agriculture will now include, Occupier Liability (Scotland) and  ‘Right to roam’ as well as updated and new legislation, including Working at height (2005), updated COSHH and RIDDOR, to mention but a few.
